Description

These Applebee's Chicken Wonton Tacos are a delicious copycat recipe featuring tender honey-garlic chicken and a zesty coleslaw, all served in crispy baked wonton shells topped with sweet chili sauce, cilantro, and sesame seeds.

Ingredients

Scale

Chicken Mixture

  • 2 chicken breasts, finely diced
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp minced fresh ginger

Coleslaw

  • 1 (397g) bag coleslaw
  • 4 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp honey

Additional

  • 16 Wonton wrappers
  • Sweet chili sauce, to serve
  • Chopped cilantro, to serve
  • Sesame seeds, to serve
  • Cooking spray or olive/canola oil for brushing

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Wonton Shells: Preheat the oven to 375 F. Spray wonton wrappers with cooking spray or brush lightly with olive or canola oil. Drape them over the side of a 9x13 inch baking dish. Bake for 7-8 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
  2. Make Wonton Shells Crispy: Remove the wonton shells from the oven while still pliable. Gently pull them apart to make filling easier. Return to the oven and bake an additional 7-8 minutes until crispy and golden.
  3. Cook Chicken: In a large bowl, mix the diced chicken with hoisin sauce, 1 tbsp sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic, and ginger. Heat a large skillet over high heat and sauté the chicken mixture for 7-8 minutes, tossing frequently until the chicken is fully cooked through.
  4. Prepare Coleslaw: While the chicken cooks, combine the bag of coleslaw, green onions, 1 tbsp sesame oil, rice vinegar, soy sauce, and honey in a large bowl. Mix thoroughly to combine the flavors.
  5. Assemble Tacos: Spoon the cooked chicken into the crispy wonton shells. Top with the prepared coleslaw. Drizzle with sweet chili sauce and garnish with chopped cilantro and sesame seeds. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Notes

  • Watch the wonton wrappers closely while baking to prevent burning as they crisp quickly.
  • Gently pulling apart the wonton shells while still warm makes filling easier and prevents breaking.
  • You can substitute boneless skinless chicken thighs for chicken breasts for juicier meat.
  • Adjust the amount of sweet chili sauce according to your preferred spice level.
  • For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free soy sauce and gluten-free wonton wrappers if available.
