Description

This Baked Blooming Onion is a healthier twist on the classic restaurant favorite, transforming a traditionally fried appetizer into a baked delight. Featuring a large yellow onion coated with a flavorful mixture of panko breadcrumbs, paprika, and Cajun seasoning, this recipe delivers a crispy and tender onion perfect for sharing during game day or as a flavorful snack.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 large yellow onion
  • ⅔ cup Panko breadcrumbs
  • ½ teaspoon ground paprika
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt
  • 2 large egg whites

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F to get it ready for baking the blooming onion.
  2. Prepare Onion: Use a sharp knife to cut off about ¼ inch from the top of the onion to expose some of the inner layers. Carefully peel off the outermost layer of the onion down to the root, but keep the root intact to hold the onion together.
  3. Slice Onion: Place the onion cut side down on a cutting board. Cut the onion into 16 equal sections by slicing straight down approximately ⅛-inch away from the root, ensuring not to cut through the root to keep the onion intact. For larger onions, you can make more sections.
  4. Open Onion: Turn the onion over and place it on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Gently separate the onion petals with your fingers so the onion blooms fully open.
  5. Mix Coating: In a small bowl, combine the panko breadcrumbs, paprika, Cajun seasoning, and sea salt. In a separate bowl, whisk the egg whites until smooth.
  6. Coat Onion Petals: Starting section by section, brush each onion petal with egg whites and then generously sprinkle with the panko mixture. Continue from the bottom to the top of each petal, rotating the onion until all sections are coated. Finish by brushing the entire onion with a final layer of egg whites and sprinkling the breadcrumb mixture evenly over the whole onion.
  7. Bake Onion: Cover the onion loosely with aluminum foil and bake for 5 minutes. Then remove the foil and continue baking uncovered for 15 minutes, or until the onion is tender and the edges have turned golden brown and crispy.

Notes

  • This baked version is a healthier alternative to the traditional fried blooming onion, reducing fat while keeping the crispy texture.
  • For extra flavor, serve with a Cajun or ranch dipping sauce of your choice.
  • You can customize the seasoning blend by adding garlic powder or cayenne pepper for an extra kick.
  • If you prefer a crispier texture, you can broil the onion uncovered for 1-2 minutes at the end, watching carefully to avoid burning.
  • Make sure not to cut through the root when slicing, as it acts as the core holding the petals together during baking.
